Cats are usually neutered from around four to six months old, before a female's first heat and before a male starts spraying or roaming. Older cats can be neutered too. Age on its own is rarely the barrier, and a pre-op check tells us more than a birthday does.
Your cat should come to the clinic a few hours before the procedure for pre-anaesthesia checks and admission. The doctor will perform a nose-to-tail examination, talk you through the scheduled procedure, and answer any questions. Food should be withheld for 6-8 hours before surgery. Water can be available until 2 hours before your cat is due to arrive at the clinic.
Your cat is sedated, then anaesthetised and monitored throughout. A spay removes the ovaries and uterus through a small incision. A castration is quicker still. Pain relief is given before your cat wakes up.
Most cats go home the same day, once they're awake, warm and steady. You'll leave with written aftercare, pain relief to continue at home, and a number to call if anything worries you overnight.
Keep your cat indoors, calm, and away from the incision. A recovery cone or surgical suit handles the licking. Expect a quieter cat for a day or two. Call us if you see swelling, discharge, or a wound your cat has got to.
A short appointment to check the incision has healed cleanly, and to remove sutures if the technique used needs it. After that your cat is signed off.

Spaying is the term for females, and involves removing the ovaries and uterus through a small incision. Castration is for males, and is a quicker procedure with a faster recovery. Both are done under general anaesthesia with pain relief, and both are permanent.
Modern feline anaesthesia is very safe and the risk for a healthy young cat is low. No anaesthetic is completely risk-free though, which is why the pre-operative examination matters. Your vet checks heart, chest, weight and general health first, then sets the anaesthetic plan around your cat. Ask us about anything that worries you before you book.
Most cats are bright within a day or two and healed within seven to ten days. Keep them indoors during that window, keep activity low, and use a recovery cone or surgical suit so they can't reach the incision. A recheck at ten to fourteen days confirms everything has closed cleanly.

No. Neutering removes hormone-driven behaviours like roaming, fighting over territory, spraying and calling in season, but it doesn't change who your cat is. Most owners describe a calmer, more settled cat. Appetite often increases, so portion sizes should come down a little.
In most cases yes. An un-neutered indoor female still comes into season, repeatedly and loudly, and stays at risk of pyometra. An un-neutered male may still spray indoors. The health benefits apply whether or not your cat goes outside. Your vet will talk it through with you.
